Space-saving protection for mezzanine columns

Mezzanine columns often sit in tight working areas where every part of the floor layout matters. Forklifts, power trucks and MHE can pass close to these columns during daily movement, especially around picking areas, stock zones, access routes and narrow operational spaces. When contact occurs, the column, vehicle and surrounding infrastructure can all be damaged.

PolyWRAP SpaceSaver Column Protectors provide visible physical protection for these exposed mezzanine columns. The slim, space-saving design helps protect the column without taking up unnecessary floor space. This makes it suitable for sites where column protection is needed, but available working space is limited.

100% recyclable LLDPE construction

PolyWRAP SpaceSaver Column Protectors are manufactured from 100% recyclable linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE). This gives the product a durable, impact absorbing structure that can deform under contact and return to shape after impact, making it suitable for industrial environments where vehicle movement and column contact are foreseeable risks.

The protectors are manufactured in the UK and suitable for internal and external use. They have a temperature range of -40°C to 90°C, which makes them suitable for ambient, chilled and freezer environments. Because of this, they can be used across a wide range of warehouse, logistics and production spaces.

Moulded sizes for common mezzanine columns

Column protection works best when the protector fits correctly around the column profile. PolyWRAP SpaceSaver Column Protectors are available in standard moulded sizes to suit columns from 100mm x 100mm up to 254mm x 254mm. Standard size options include 100mm x 100mm, 120mm x 120mm, 152mm x 152mm, 203mm x 203mm and 250mm x 250mm.

For the best fit, contact our team with your exact column measurements. This should include the external column dimensions and any internal profile details that may affect the fit. Our team can then advise the most suitable SpaceSaver size and whether foam inserts are required.

Foam inserts for closer fitting protection

Some mezzanine column sizes fall between standard protector options. In these cases, foam inserts can be made to suit the column size, helping create a closer fit between the protector and the column profile.

This supports more consistent positioning around the column and helps the protector sit correctly once secured. It also helps reduce open voids within the protector, which can prevent employees from placing rubbish, packaging or loose items inside the unit.

Quick installation with ratchet straps

PolyWRAP SpaceSaver Column Protectors use a simple clam-shell design for quick installation. The protector wraps around the column and is secured using 2x 25mm wide ratchet straps with 800kg rating. No mechanical floor or column fixing is required.

This makes the system suitable for active sites where installation time and disruption need to be kept low. The high-visibility yellow and black finish also helps make columns easier for drivers and operators to identify before contact occurs.

Base plate recess for column bases and studs

Mezzanine columns often include base plates, studs and fixing details at floor level. PolyWRAP SpaceSaver Column Protectors include a recess feature to cover column base plates and studs up to 320mm x 320mm.

This helps the protector sit correctly around the column base while maintaining a neater fitted appearance. It also supports safer movement around the column by helping cover exposed base details within the protector footprint.

Where PolyWRAP SpaceSaver Column Protectors are specified

PolyWRAP SpaceSaver Column Protectors are specified where mezzanine columns need protection, but floor space is limited. Typical applications include warehouses, distribution centres, mezzanine floors, picking areas, narrow aisles, stockholding zones, production areas, cold stores and internal MHE routes.

They are especially useful where columns sit close to forklift or power truck movement. They also suit sites where column visibility is poor, or where previous contact has caused damage to columns, vehicles or base plates. The protector helps cushion impact and reduces damage to both vehicle and column.

Supporting compliance and duty of care

Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, employers must ensure, so far as reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare of employees at work. Regulation 17 of the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 also requires workplace traffic routes to be suitable for the people and vehicles using them. This is relevant where MHE operates close to mezzanine columns, structural supports and restricted working areas.

PolyWRAP SpaceSaver Column Protectors provide a practical physical control measure for reducing impact risk around mezzanine columns in space-restricted MHE areas. For H&S managers, facilities managers, warehouse operators, specifiers and contractors, specifying space-saving column protection helps demonstrate a proactive approach to workplace transport risk, building protection and site organisation. The result is more visible columns, reduced impact damage and safer movement across the site.
