Structural and mezzanine columns create contact hazards in busy production, assembly and logistics environments. Operatives often work close to these columns, especially near walkways, machinery, packing areas and manufacturing stations. When people clash with exposed steel columns, the risk of head, shoulder, arm or body contact increases.
SoftWRAP i-Beam Column Protection provides a soft physical protection layer around exposed columns. The wrap-around design helps cushion personnel contact while making the column more visible in the working area. This makes it suitable for locations where people move or work close to structural steel.
Soft column protection needs to be visible, durable and practical for industrial environments. SoftWRAP uses high tear resistant yellow textured vinyl canvas, wrapped around polyethylene-based medium density foam cores. This gives the product a soft contact surface while maintaining a practical outer finish for busy facilities.
The product is manufactured in the UK from high tear resistant HGV trailer polymer canvas. It is also water and weather proof, making it suitable for demanding internal environments and selected external or exposed applications where the site conditions allow.
SoftWRAP is designed for easy wrap-around fitment to i-Beams and structural columns. The protector wraps around the column and secures using a 50mm Velcro seam, helping create a close fit without mechanical fixing into the column.
This makes installation quick and practical for active production, assembly and logistics areas. It also allows the protector to be fitted around existing columns where a rigid protector may not be the most suitable option.
SoftWRAP i-Beam Column Protection is typically installed at 1100mm or 1800mm heights. The correct height depends on the type of machinery, pedestrian activity and contact risk within the working environment.
Standard options are designed to fit 152mm x 152mm UC and 310mm x 310mm UC column sizes. For the best fit, contact our team with your full column measurements and site requirements. This should include the external column dimensions, internal profile details and any surrounding obstructions that may affect the wrap, foam grade or final fit.
Not every column profile or working area is the same. Because of this, SoftWRAP i-Beam Column Protection can be supplied with internal foam grades to suit specific applications. This helps the protector match the level of contact risk, working environment and required fit.
Bespoke variations are available on request where the site uses different column sizes, unusual profiles or specific protection heights. Our team can advise on the most suitable SoftWRAP configuration once the full column dimensions and application details are confirmed.
SoftWRAP i-Beam Column Protection is specified where structural or mezzanine columns sit close to pedestrian routes or operative work areas. Typical applications include production lines, assembly areas, packing benches, logistics facilities, manufacturing sites, warehouse walkways, machinery zones and high-traffic pedestrian areas.
It is especially useful where column contact is more likely to involve people rather than vehicles. It also suits areas where visual awareness and softer contact protection are more appropriate than rigid column guards or steel barriers.
Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, employers must ensure, so far as reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare of employees at work. The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 also require workplaces, traffic routes and work areas to be maintained in a condition that does not expose people to unnecessary risk.
SoftWRAP i-Beam Column Protection provides a practical physical control measure for helping reduce contact risk around exposed structural and mezzanine columns. For H&S managers, facilities managers, production managers, site operators and contractors, specifying soft column protection helps demonstrate a proactive approach to workplace hazard control and pedestrian safety. The result is more visible columns, reduced contact risk and safer movement around the site.
