High-visibility pedestrian handrail for walkways and zoned protection
In warehouse and industrial environments, pedestrian walkways need to be clearly defined and immediately recognisable to everyone on site. The Pedestrian Handrail HR50 combines the strength and modularity of a galvanised steel tube and clamp handrail system with high-visibility yellow and black polymer sleeves that make pedestrian routes stand out in busy operational environments.
At 1100mm high, it provides compliant hand level support and clear visual definition along pedestrian routes. It is particularly well suited to locations where head and limb clash risks exist, such as under conveyor systems or adjacent to low-clearance structures. It also suits loading bay perimeters, vehicle and pedestrian separation routes and any location where a high-visibility, DDA compliant handrail system is required for long-term indoor or outdoor use.
HDPE polymer sleeves for visibility and DDA compliance
The HR50 polymer sleeves slide over the 42.4mm galvanised steel rails and uprights, covering the full external diameter of 50mm. The sleeves are manufactured from high-density polyethylene in yellow and black as standard, with black available on request.
The polymer surface is warm to touch, meeting DDA requirements for handrails in environments used by members of the public or where accessibility compliance is required. The smooth, snag free finish across all modular joints ensures the handrail is comfortable and safe to use for all personnel. The high contrast yellow and black colouring draws immediate attention to the pedestrian route, reinforcing safe movement boundaries in busy operational spaces.
Modular galvanised steel construction
The HR50 uses the same modular tube and clamp connection system as the HR42, with components connecting using clamps rather than welding. This allows the handrail to be assembled, reconfigured and extended on site without specialist tools or fabrication equipment. Components cut to length on site using a standard chop-saw, keeping installation time and fitting costs to a minimum. All components supply in kit form with all fixings included.
The steel uprights and rails carry a galvanised finish, providing long-term corrosion resistance in demanding indoor and outdoor environments. Both the steel and HDPE components are fully recyclable.
Access options and additional protection
The HR50 is compatible with the full Brandsafe pedestrian safety system range. Pedestrian Sprung Return Gates provide controlled, self-closing entry and exit points within the handrail run where pedestrian access is required. Floor Rail Bumpers are available to add low-level protection at floor level alongside the handrail where MHE encroachment is an additional concern.
This compatibility makes the HR50 a flexible specification that integrates into both new and existing Brandsafe safety layouts without requiring bespoke fabrication or modification. Speak to a member of our team today about bespoke projects.
Where the Pedestrian Handrail HR50 is specified
The HR50 suits any location where a high-visibility, DDA compliant modular handrail is required for walkway definition, hazardous area protection or pedestrian and vehicle separation. Typical applications include warehouse and factory pedestrian walkways, under conveyor systems and adjacent to low-clearance structures where head and limb clash risks exist, LV and IT cabinet enclosures where pedestrian and MHE encroachment needs to be restricted, loading bay perimeters and access routes and public or commercial environments where DDA compliant handrail surfaces are required alongside high visibility route definition.
Its modular design makes it particularly well suited to sites where layouts change regularly or where the handrail needs to be extended or reconfigured over time without specialist installation resources.
Supporting compliance and duty of care
Under the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 and the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, employers must keep pedestrian routes clearly defined and safe from vehicle encroachment and physical hazards. In locations where head and limb clash risks exist or where DDA compliance is required, a physical handrail system at the correct height with an appropriate surface finish is one of the most direct control measures available.
The Pedestrian Handrail HR50 provides a documented physical control measure at these locations. For H&S managers, facilities teams and specifiers, installing a high-visibility, DDA compliant handrail system across pedestrian routes demonstrates a proactive and comprehensive approach to workplace safety. It also supports the requirement to manage foreseeable risks to a practicable minimum. The result is clearer routes, fewer near misses and a safer, more accessible working environment across the site.
