Improving Loading Bay Safety at a Distribution Centre in Minworth
Brandsafe recently supplied and installed a targeted loading bay protection package at a large distribution centre in Minworth.
The Double Bumper Barrier provides heavy-duty, low-level impact protection for people, equipment and building fabric without taking up too much space. Manufactured from flexible HDPE polymer, the barrier flexes and absorbs on impact, meaning there is little to no floor damage in the event of a collision.
Please note: All polymer barrier installations include a minimum length of 1.4 metres. For barrier runs of 3 metres or more, a centre post will be incorporated to ensure maximum protection and structural integrity.

In busy warehouse environments, low-level impact protection needs to perform under repeated, heavy contact without taking up valuable operational space. The Double Bumper Barriers provides heavy-duty defence at 670mm high with a dual rail configuration, sitting directly in the path of forklift tines, pallet truck bumpers and vehicle bases where contact is most likely. It delivers greater strength than a single rail alternative without increasing the footprint. That makes it the practical choice for higher-risk locations where frequent contact is expected.
The Double Bumper Barrier has been tested by IWS Group to PAS 13 standards using a weighted pendulum testing rig. Testing demonstrated that at a 90° impact angle the barrier absorbed 14,200J of energy. At a 45° impact angle it absorbed 28,400J. These results are equivalent to a 6.4 mph impact from a 3,500kg forklift with a measured deflection of 214mm. All testing was conducted using M12 Safety Plus Anchors, confirming performance under standard warehouse conditions.
The barrier is manufactured from flexible high-density polyethylene. The HDPE deflects on impact and reforms its shape afterwards, meaning the barrier continues to provide protection after contact without requiring immediate replacement. Unlike metal alternatives, minimal force transfers into the floor on impact. This reduces floor damage and the maintenance costs that come with it over time. Less floor damage means less disruption to daily operations.
The material is non-toxic, fully recyclable and resistant to moisture, mould and most solvents. It performs across ambient, chilled and freezer environments and is suitable for food production facilities where hygiene and material safety are additional requirements alongside physical protection.
The Double Bumper Barrier is supplied in Safety Yellow and Grey as standard, providing a clear visual boundary for MHE drivers and warehouse teams at known risk points. Bespoke colours are available on request, subject to minimum order quantities.
The barrier stands at 670mm high with a 300mm footplate width. Standard lengths start from 1400mm and are variable to suit the specific layout of the site. Each post fixes using 4x M12 x 120mm Safety Plus Anchors per footplate, with all fixings supplied.Installation is straightforward and keeps operational downtime to a minimum. For barrier runs of 3 metres or more, a centre post is incorporated as standard to maintain structural integrity across the full length.
The Double Bumper Barrier suits racking ends, aisle boundaries, loading areas, building entrances and any location where heavy low-level vehicle contact is a known and recurring risk. Its dual rail configuration makes it particularly well suited to locations where a single rail system would not provide sufficient impact resistance, but a full-height barrier would obstruct visibility or movement.
It works effectively as a standalone section or as part of a wider barrier system across the site. A single bumper version is also available where a lighter specification is sufficient at the same location.
Under the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 and the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, employers are required to maintain safe working environments and take reasonable steps to protect people, equipment and building fabric from foreseeable vehicle impacts. Low-level impact points at racking ends, aisle boundaries and loading areas represent exactly this kind of foreseeable risk.
The Double Bumper Barrier provides a tested, PAS 13 compliant physical control measure at these locations. For H&S managers, facilities teams and specifiers, barrier protection at known low-level impact points demonstrates a proactive approach to workplace safety and supports the requirement to manage foreseeable risks to a practicable minimum. The result is fewer incidents, lower repair costs and a stronger safety record across the site.
