Defining walkways and protecting assets at floor level with Pedestrian Safety Barriers SEG Plus

In busy warehouse and industrial environments, keeping pedestrians and forklift traffic safely apart is one of the most fundamental safety requirements on any site. The Pedestrian Safety Barrier SEG+ goes further than a standard pedestrian barrier. It combines the modular polymer and steel barrier system of the SEG with a low-level Armco rail attached to the steel boot bases, providing additional protection against forklift tine damage at floor level. The result is controlled traffic flow, clear pedestrian boundaries and asset protection in a single system.

This makes the SEG+ the preferred choice for locations where pallet stacking or forklift activity sits adjacent to the barrier run and where tine damage to walls, equipment or critical infrastructure is a known risk alongside the pedestrian safety requirement.

HDPE and galvanised steel construction with Armco rail

The barrier uses steel boot bases, polymer posts and polymer rail sets. Steel boots fabricate from 100mm x 100mm SHS with 180mm x 180mm x 10mm thick baseplates. All steelwork carries a hot dip galvanised finish to BS EN ISO 1461. The polymer posts and rail sets are high-density polyethylene in black and yellow as standard.

The low-level Armco rail attaches directly to the steel boot bases, extending protection to the floor zone where forklift tines, pallet edges and vehicle bumpers make contact with adjacent walls and infrastructure. No painted surfaces means no repainting is required. The HDPE components are non-toxic, fully recyclable and perform across ambient, chilled and freezer environments. The system is manufactured in the UK.

Access options and demountable variation

The SEG+ is designed for locations where occasional access behind the barrier is required as well as everyday pedestrian and vehicle separation. Pedestrian Sprung Return Gates are available for high-traffic access points where hands-free, self-closing entry is needed. The Demountable SEG variation uses a horseshoe shaped floor fixing that allows individual sections to be removed quickly without dismantling the full barrier run. This provides easy access to LV cabinets, IDF cabinets, electrical distribution boards, water and gas infrastructure and any other critical services located behind the barrier.

This makes the SEG+ particularly well suited to any location where a barrier is needed for day to day pedestrian and vehicle separation but where maintenance access, emergency access or equipment servicing behind the barrier is an operational requirement.

Installation and fixing

The system uses 4x Rawl M10 x 105mm Safety Plus Anchors per post. All fixings are supplied. Post centres sit at 1160mm high with 1600mm between post centres. The modular components assemble on site without specialist fabrication equipment. Rail sets cut to length using a standard chop-saw, allowing the system to fit any layout quickly and efficiently. This keeps installation time and fitting costs to a minimum.

Where the Pedestrian Safety Barrier SEG+ is specified

The SEG+ suits any location where pedestrians and MHE share operational space, a defined physical boundary is required and low-level asset protection is also needed. Typical applications include warehouse walkways and picking aisles adjacent to racking or pallet storage, loading areas and holding zones, LV and IT cabinet enclosures requiring regular maintenance access, critical infrastructure zones including water, gas and electrical distribution, mezzanine edges and perimeter routes in distribution centres and manufacturing facilities.

Its modular design makes it particularly well suited to complex or irregular site layouts where a fixed system would not provide the flexibility needed. Where a fixed system would not work, this one does.

Supporting compliance and duty of care

Under the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 and the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, employers must keep pedestrian routes clearly defined and safe from vehicle encroachment. The barrier meets the requirements of BS 6180:2011 and EN 1991-1-1 Eurocode 1 for barrier height. This provides a compliant physical boundary at the standard required for pedestrian protection in industrial environments.

The Pedestrian Safety Barrier SEG+ provides a documented physical control measure at the point where pedestrian and vehicle routes meet, with the additional benefit of low-level asset protection at the same location. For H&S managers, facilities teams and specifiers, installing the SEG+ across pedestrian routes and critical infrastructure zones demonstrates a proactive and comprehensive approach to workplace safety. The result is clearer routes, fewer near misses and a safer working environment across the site.
