Heavy Duty Potted Bollard Ground-fixed protection for the highest-impact locations

Where vehicles repeatedly reverse and manoeuvre in close proximity to building infrastructure, a bolt-down bollard transfers impact force into the floor anchors and surrounding slab. A potted bollard does not. The Heavy Duty Potted Bollard is cast directly into the ground, giving it a fixed anchorage that performs under repeated heavy impacts from HGV trailers and MHE without placing stress on the surrounding floor surface.

This makes it the strongest specification in the Brandsafe bollard range. It is the preferred choice for external level access loading doors, building entrances and service areas where the risk and frequency of vehicle contact is highest.

Diamond core drill installation and cast-in strength

Installation uses a diamond core drill to create the socket, which is then cast in concrete to a depth of approximately 500mm. This depth of anchorage provides the structural performance that makes potted bollards superior to surface-mounted alternatives in high-impact environments. No floor anchors are required and there are no fixings to maintain or replace over time.

The total installed depth is the finished height of the bollard plus 500mm. This should be factored into site surveys and installation planning, particularly where underground services or structural slabs require assessment before core drilling begins.

A demountable option is also available, using a mounting cap fixed with 3x M16 x 150mm hot dip galvanised throughbolts to BS EN ISO 1461, for sites where occasional removal is required.

Steel core and LLDPE cover construction

The bollard is manufactured from a mild steel core with a hot dip galvanised finish to BS EN ISO 1461, providing long-term corrosion resistance in external and exposed environments. The steel core is fitted with a UV stabilised LLDPE polymer cover, manufactured in the UK. The cover provides high visibility, a degree of impact absorption and a no-paint maintenance finish. A worn or damaged cover replaces independently without disturbing the cast-in steel core. Maintenance costs and site disruption stay low over the lifetime of the installation.

Heights and configuration

Three finished height options are available: 960mm, 1260mm and 1560mm. All three heights are supplied as standard with all fixings and cover kits included. Bespoke sizes and configurations are available on request.

Colour coding and visibility

The LLDPE cover is available in five standard colour schemes, each corresponding to a recognised warehouse and industrial safety zone designation. Black and yellow is the standard configuration and suits general caution areas. Yellow and black suits the same application. Green and white identifies fire escape routes. Red and white marks high warning areas. Yellow suits general hazard marking across the site.

Every bollard carries a 50mm reflective silver band, improving visibility in low-light conditions and supporting safer vehicle movement around the installation.

Where the Heavy Duty Potted Bollard is specified

The bollard is specified at external level access loading doors, building entrances, structural columns, service yards and pedestrian access points where vehicles frequently reverse or manoeuvre close to fixed infrastructure. Its ground-fixed design makes it particularly effective where repeated impact is expected and a surface-mounted system would not provide sufficient anchorage.

It is suitable for both internal and external industrial use across warehouses, distribution centres and logistics facilities.

Supporting compliance and duty of care

Under the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 and the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, employers are required to keep traffic routes safe and take reasonable steps to protect building fabric, assets and people from foreseeable vehicle impacts. At loading doors and service areas where HGV and MHE traffic is constant, unprotected infrastructure represents a foreseeable and manageable risk.

The Heavy Duty Potted Bollard provides a permanent, ground-fixed physical control measure at the point of highest risk. For facilities managers, H&S managers and specifiers, a cast-in bollard system at high-impact access points demonstrates a considered and robust approach to both traffic management and structural protection. The result is fewer incidents, lower repair costs and a stronger safety record across the site.
