Height warning protection for overhead restrictions
Overhead structures can be difficult for forklift and vehicle operators to judge during daily movement. Mezzanines, doorways, beams, slab decks, insulated panels and service areas can all create height restrictions within workplace routes. Without a clear visual warning, vehicles may strike the structure, equipment or surrounding infrastructure.
Height Restriction Clatter Bars provide a suspended warning point before the vehicle reaches the obstruction. The bar hangs below the structure and alerts operators through both visibility and audible contact. This helps reduce the risk of harder clashes with equipment, doors, beams and overhead infrastructure.
High-density polyethylene construction
Height Restriction Clatter Bars are manufactured from high-density polyethylene (HDPE). This gives the bar a practical polymer construction for suspended height warning applications in commercial and industrial environments.
The tube has a 123.5mm diameter and is supplied with rubber end caps. The product is supplied in high-visibility yellow as standard, helping vehicle operators identify the height warning point as they approach the restricted area. When contacted, the suspended bar also provides an audible warning before the vehicle reaches the structure.
Standard lengths with bespoke options
Different sites have different openings, vehicle routes and clearance risks. Because of this, Height Restriction Clatter Bars are available in standard lengths of 1250mm, 1500mm, 2000mm and 2500mm. These options suit a range of doorways, mezzanine edges, internal routes and operational openings.
Bespoke lengths can also be discussed where a standard size is not suitable. Colour, chain length, chain material, signage and hanging arrangement can be reviewed against the site requirement. For bespoke lengths, suspension details or fixing advice, contact our team before ordering.
Bespoke chain and fixing requirements
The clatter bar is sold as the main warning bar, while chains, fixings and suspension components are specified separately to suit the installation. This is important because every site structure is different. A mezzanine beam, I-beam, slab deck, boom bar, insulated panel or ceiling structure may each require a different fixing approach.
Chain length is decided by the client based on the required hanging height. Chain material can be polymer or galvanised steel, depending on the site requirement. Fixing options can include insulated ceiling fixings, flange clamp fixings and Lindaptor-style beam fixing options, subject to suitability. In some cases, the customer may need to source specific fixings separately if the site structure requires a specialist fixing method.
Custom signage and visibility options
A height restriction product needs to be easy to understand before the operator reaches the hazard. Height Restriction Clatter Bars can be supplied with letterset signage, including โHEIGHT RESTRICTIONโ, to make the warning clearer for forklift and vehicle operators.
Colour and signage requirements can be discussed to suit the working environment. This is useful where the bar needs to match an existing safety system, sit within a high-traffic route or stand out clearly in a visually busy area. As a result, the warning point can be tailored to the way the site operates.
Where Height Restriction Clatter Bars are specified
Height Restriction Clatter Bars are specified where vehicle operators need a clear warning before reaching overhead restrictions. Typical applications include mezzanines, warehouse doorways, structural beams, internal vehicle routes, loading areas, service corridors, cold store entrances, insulated panel openings and areas below slab decking.
They are especially useful where forklifts, pallet trucks or other workplace vehicles move close to overhead obstructions. They also suit sites where vehicle heights vary, or where new equipment, racking layouts or building changes have introduced new clearance risks.
Supporting compliance and duty of care
Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, employers must ensure, so far as reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare of employees at work. The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 also require workplace traffic routes to be suitable for the people and vehicles using them. HSE workplace transport guidance states that sites should provide clear signed warnings of height or width restrictions in advance and at the obstruction itself, and HSE also advises measuring and recording vertical clearance under overhead obstructions on vehicle routes.
Height Restriction Clatter Bars provide a practical visual and audible warning measure for overhead restrictions on workplace vehicle routes. For H&S managers, facilities managers, warehouse operators, contractors and site teams, specifying clatter bars helps demonstrate a proactive approach to vehicle route management and overhead obstruction control. The result is clearer height awareness, reduced impact risk and safer movement through restricted areas.
